Fans' Thoughts - Jamie Pearce

June 11, 2019

2018-19 was a tough season for the Lions, both on and off the pitch.  There has been a lot said from the media, football experts and the club itself.  But what do you, the Millwall Fans think of the most recent campaign and what we can do going forward?  For this edition of Fans’ Thoughts, we sit down with Jamie Pearce, a keen long distance runner who along with being a guide runner, has contributed his time and efforts towards the Isla Caton campaign.

Quite simply - uninspiring and last season was a hard watch. The first half consisted of stubborn tactics and the second some change as panic grew.  We constantly looked tired and wound up because of it. The cup run was an obvious glimpse of hunger but we couldn’t do anything to transfer that into the league. I think the uncertainty of too many contracts ending made a fair few short sighted, the only one who positively reacted to this was Fergie.

What Harris got right: His highlight, sending Thommo out on loan and bringing him back in Jan rather than the end of the season as well as getting Pearce in for leadership and experience at the back. What he got wrong was his need to make defensive subs when we had the lead time after time, inciting pressure and costing us points.

High of the season was certainly Everton last minute of the game followed by the low and heartache of Brighton. Magic of the cup, eh?

Player that performed well, has to be Fergie. There were stand out performances that you expect, but Fergie took the potential of being released to make an amazing turn around and become a player we loved having in the starting 11, which couldn’t have been said for the 18 months prior to Jan.

Player to not live up to potential - Aiden O' Brien. I like him a lot, but think he didn’t make the most of his few games upfront to show Harris he should be there. I think the pressure to perform or be benched again got to him. I also believe we don’t use him effectively though.

I think we need a couple of leaders, one who can lead the midfield especially. And then some energy built around this in a few youngsters.  One player I wouldn’t mind us going for would be James Norwood from Tranmere. He reminds me of a Millwall type of player and would give it a go. We’ve had risks like that work out more times then they haven’t and I think he’d fit in and go for it.

The pre-season is nothing new is it?  I’m looking forward to seeing who the home game will be, hoping it’s an exciting one, we need some ambition and I hope the wait is worth finding out who it’ll be. We’re a championship side, the games we’ve gone for do not prep us for what we are due to come across, especially our trip to Essex.

I’m quite optimistic about next season. Harris has a knack for pulling something out the bag and I believe he’s going to make some good signings. A keeper will now be expensive as our desperation will mean we overpay but I hope it’s worth it. I want to see more of the youth side in the 1st team and actually get minutes. Would have much preferred seeing Lewis White jump on this year than Hutch coming as an addition defender and inviting pressure with no one in the middle of the park.
