2018-19 was a tough season for the Lions, both on and off the pitch. There has been a lot said from the media, football experts and the club itself. But what do you, the Millwall Fans think of the most recent campaign and what we can do going forward? For this edition of Fans’ Thoughts, we sit down with Alex Grace, the face of YouTube's NewsatDen TV and Millwall reporter for The72.
Overall if you had said to me at the start of the season that we would stay up and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup then I would have taken it. Obviously the fact we were far to close to the relegation zone was a concern but we achieved our main aim of staying up so in the end job done.
Neil Harris received a lot of criticism throughout the season perhaps sometimes unfairly. Recruitment last season was not the best and that had a part to play in the disappointing season. Harris was guilty of standing by certain players for too long and not changing his system early enough. His interview at the end of the season however restored a lot of people’s faith in him
It has to be the FA Cup run [most memorable moment]. Once again we showed just how difficult a place the The Den can be to visit. My moment of the season was Murray Wallace’s last minute winner against Everton. It sent the whole place into overdrive and showed just how much the FA Cup means to us.
Lee Gregory, Shane Ferguson, Jake Cooper and later on both Ben Thompson and Alex Pearce I was impressed with. They all showed the right attitude and showed the fight required when wearing a Millwall shirt, there must be a mention for Dave Martin as well who I feel produced some excellent displays towards the end of the season.
In terms of those who disappointed. I had big hopes for Ben Marshall when he came back but it never really took off for him the same could be said for Jiri Skalak but he was never really given a chance neither was Fred Onyedimna.
A major overhaul is needed I think we currently have 18 senior players so we are lacking depth. The goalkeeping area in particular is one of concern. I like the look of Ramsdale at Bournemouth I think he would be a good fit. Defence is looking strong with the addition of Alex Pearce however, we need cover for both the full backs. We are also desperately needing quality up front now Gregory has departed. Tom Bradshaw will need help as he has got big boots to fill for Gregory. It’s hard to say who we should be looking as it as so far we have no clue on what shape or tactics Harris will deploy next season.
It’s the same every season isn’t it [uninspiring pre-season choices]? We never seem to get those big spectacular pre-season games that others get. But those fixtures can provide a confidence boost providing we win them and get a good feeling around the club again, it’s nice to see a local one in there which I’m sure a few of the fans will fancy going to.
