This has been a season for Millwall Football Club that has been one of the most challenging on and off the field in recent years. There have been some fantastic moments like the FA Cup run that saw our boys be a match for Premier League clubs Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion, but a disappointing league campaign saw our Lions stay up by the skin of our teeth.
Although there have been some testing moments, there have been a number of players who have risen to the challenge and proved why they are worthy choices for this season's Player of the Year award. You have been voting both online and in person for the last several weeks and the MSC thank you wholeheartedly for this, so without further ado, your Player of the Year, runner-ups and the Special Services award winners can be found below:
3rd Place: Shane Ferguson
What can we say about Fergie that has not already been said? The winger has gone from being a player that was in-and-out of the squad at the beginning of the campaign, but since he has had a run in the side he has been arguably the first name on the team sheet. A member of the team who can comfortably play at left-back or left-wing, a player with unquestionable skill and ability and someone who always excites the fans with the ball at his feet, Shane Ferguson rightly deserves to be considered one of the main contenders for the Player of the Year award.
Runner-Up: Jake Cooper
In a difficult season for a defence that has been ever changing around him, Jake Cooper has been the one constant and played in every minute of every league game for Neil Harris in this campaign. Along with the ability to play the ball out from the back line and be the player who puts his body on the line for the club in every game, Cooper has racked up an impressive number of goals with seven to his name in all competitions. The defender missed out on the main honour by the smallest of margins, but has proven this season on the pitch why so many fans voted for him.
MSC Player of the Year: Lee Gregory
Top scorer for Millwall FC this season, a vital member of the squad who has topped our goal-scoring charts in every campaign he plays, a man who puts absolutely everything on the line for our football club and a player whose commitment for the fans can never ever be questioned. The Player of the Season, as voted for by you, the Millwall fans, is Lee Gregory. The thirteen goals and seven assists he has produced this season has shown just how much of a pivotal part the striker has played and without him we would be without doubt in a far worse position. Gregory has rightly secured his name in Millwall folklore and will remain a club legend no matter where his future lies, but on behalf of all the Millwall fans, this is an award that is so rightly deserved.
Special award for Services: Brian Tonks
The vast majority of the time, it is the players who receive the recognition when the season is going well or there are bright moments. But let’s not forget, there are also a lot of people behind the scenes who contribute to making the season what it is. The images that are taken of the Lions in action, the pictures of Millwall fans at opening training sessions and family fun days and the photos you see of new signings as soon as they are announced are captured by the man behind the lens, 'Tonksy'. A Millwall legend behind the scenes and a man whose dedication and determination towards our club as a whole is a testament to him as an individual, this season's Special Award for Services goes to Brian Tonks.
