This has been one of the best seasons for Millwall in recent memory. The performances on the pitch have been outstanding, the passion the players have been displaying has been inspirational and our image and pride has been restored thanks to Neil Harris’ and his side. The fans, the playing staff and everyone behind the scenes at our wonderful football club have shown togetherness and a unity that is unrivalled and working together we nearly achieved the seemingly impossible dream of securing a place in the Championship Play-Offs.
This year’s Player of the Season has had to be at his absolute pinnacle and show consistency throughout a terrific season. There were many of our players who could have staked a claim this award, but only one can join the likes of club legends Teddy Sheringham, Keith Stevens Kasey Keller and Neil Harris and be the recipient of the Player of the Season award.
An online vote and paper entries have been cast by Millwall fans, and the Millwall Supporters’ Club are delighted to announce the three players with the most votes:
3rd Place: Steve Morison
Last year’s player of the season has had a fantastic year back in the Championship. Morison’s role has changed from main target man and although he has not got the goals he has got in previous years, what he has brought to this Millwall side has been invaluable. Morison started the campaign as vice-captain to Tony Craig and after the latter’s departure to Bristol Rovers, took on the armband on a permanent basis. The leadership he has displayed has been outstanding and he has shown there is still plenty to offer.
Runner-Up: Jed Wallace
Jed has made the jump from League One to Championship appear effortless, and he is arguably the main catalyst when Millwall are on the attack. Energetic, skilful, determined and exciting to watch, Wallace has already made himself a firm favourite with the Millwall supporters and clearly loves playing at The Den for the Lions. Wallace also has also got a respectable goal return for a wide man, with seven goals in all competitions, and was rightly in contention for the main award.
MSC Player of the Year: Shaun Hutchinson
What can be said about the Millwall defender that hasn’t been mentioned already? Hutchinson has been a rock at the back and managed to keep some of the best young players in the country at bay this season. Hutchinson has been a huge contributor towards this season’s unbeaten run, and the noise of his crunching tackles that ring around The Den are now becoming a weekly occurrence. Shaun Hutchinson joins the likes of Barry Kitchener, Stuart Nethercott, Darren Ward and Danny Shittu as defenders who have won the Player of the Season title, and it has been thoroughly deserved.
Special award for Services: Steve Chalk and the Ground Staff
The vast majority of the time, it is the players who receive the recognition when the season is going so well. But let’s not forget, there are also a lot of people behind the scenes who contribute to making the season what it is. Fans may say about how well the players are playing on the pitch, and that leads us to our wonderful ground staff. When there have been reports up and down the country of games being postponed or pitches not being the condition that we would expect, the pitch at The Den has always been fantastic, so this year’s Special award for Services goes to Head Groundsman Steve Chalk and the rest of the Ground Staff.
