MATCH PREVIEW | Millwall Lionesses v London Bees

February 21, 2018

Written by:

After the impressive defensive display against Arsenal on Sunday which saw the Lionesses unfortunately bow out of the FA Cup 1-0, it's back to league action tonight and avoiding defeat would make it a year unbeaten in the WSL.

A midweek London derby will be underway at 7:45PM tonight under the lights in Rotherhithe and these two sides won't need no introduction of each other, The two sides have already met twice this season with the Lionesses winning both 3-2 and 4-3, both away from home.

The London Bees have lead 2-0 in both of them games but failed to hold on as the front line of Millwall found gaps in the defence and pieces of pure class to amount to impressive comebacks.

There may be a few changes to the side that faced Arsenal on Sunday due to how quickly this game has come about and the players work rates they put in on Sunday may have taken it's toll the morning after.

With there being no competitive game after this until the 25th of March this game wont allow for any form to be built by either side. Over a month off before travelling to Oxford, 3 points tonight for the Lionesses could really be beneficial in leap frogging Doncaster Belles who visit Aston Villa tonight.

Leighanne Robe won POTM against Arsenal on Sunday and has been in very impressive form this season, The defender has been vital in Millwall's defence this season and Leighanne's performances have improved game by game.

Amber Gaylor has shown a high level of professionalism this season. The midfielder hadn't played many minutes before 2018 but came into the side and has impressed in the midfield and on the wing, It will be interesting to see if Amber stays in the squad today or if Ella Rutherford who did pick up a knock on Sunday or Charlie Devlin will return to the side.

Arsenal 1 Millwall 0 (FA CUP) 18/02/18

Beth Mead struck in the 31st minute to send the WSL 1 side through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup. Arsenal enjoyed large spells of the possession however the Millwall back line were at their best to stop Arsenal running away with the game.

Brighton 3 London Bees 1 (League) 11/02/18

Howles gave the visitors the lead just 3 minutes in but it was all square again just two minutes later when Buet found the net. Brighton all but wrapped up the game at half time thanks to another two goals from Umotong and Whelan.

London Bees 3 Millwall 4 (WSL CUP) 05/11/17

This game had almost everything in this. The hosts took a two goal lead almost straight away when Toussaint and Wilson gave the Bees hope of a win over the Lionessess. However Rianna Dean would half the deficit before half time. Millwall levelled the game 5 minutes into the second half when Ashlee Hincks curled an effort into the top corner. Ellie Mason came off the bench to put the South London side ahead when she smartly finished from a cross inside the box. It was 4 not long later when Hincks again scored but this time from the spot to make it 4-2 Millwall. However the madness continued and the home side were then given a penalty, The penalty smashed the bar but Toussaint was there to tap in. The Lionesses held on and claimed their only points in the WSL cup.

Grace Taylor completed a move to tonight's opposition London Bees yesterday. Grace has been involved with the Millwall development side but has also seen some game time for the first team as well.

Everyone at the MSC would like to thank Grace for her time at the club and all the best in the future.

Despite not getting off to the best of starts this season the London Bees have improved their form recently which has only seen them lose once in their last 5 league matches, winning 2 and drawing 2.

They currently sit 8th in the WSL and Luke Swindlehurst seems very confident his side will get the job done in South London tonight. With a London derby tonight and anything can happen in them, Luke feels his side could upset the Lionesses tonight and ruin their parade.

One player who impressed last time when these two sides met was Destiney Toussaint, The quick talented winger was a handful for Millwall's back line so it will be interesting to see if she can repeat that tonight.

1 year unbeaten in the league tonight if Millwall avoid defeat and as much as that will be an incredible achievement the main job tonight is 3 points and keep up this title fight.

It's tonight, it will have goals, Will you be there?
