Nothing beats the opening game of the season, confidence is high amongst the team and the fans who definitely enjoyed the day as well as the result.
The MSC were proud to Sponsor 3 of the Lionesses, Ellie Mason, Megan Alexander and the Lionesses most capped player Sarah Quantrill.
Watford were more than ready for the task ahead after suffering a 2-1 defeat on the last game of the spring series just gone and it was the visitors who took the lead when just after 5 minutes when Bianca Bragg broke free from a challenge inside the box to cut back the ball to Simona Petkova who couldn't miss from 6 yards out.
The early goal for the visitors seemed to have a massive turning point on the game but in the Lionesses favour. Watford were deservedly ahead as they dominated the first 5, but the goal seemed to have awoken the Lions.
The Lionesses were becoming very physical and winning all the 50/50 balls and all the loose balls and were rewarded for their grit when Leanne Cowan's corner was smashed home from Billie Brooks who rose highest in the crowded penalty area to head the ball past the Watford keeper and into the back of the net. GAME ON!!
The Lionesses could have hone in front just past the half of an hour mark when Devlin was put through on goal on the right hand side but saw her volley flash over the bar.
They finally took the lead when Ella Rutherford done well in the midfield to keep the ball down and under control to slot through Leanne Cowan who was very much more than delighted if her celebration has anything to say about it.
The Lionesses were on top but needed the third goal to give a bit of breathing space and that came 15 minutes into the second half when Rianna Dean attempted an acrobatic effort but couldn't quite connect however the visitors failed to clear and Ellie Mason smashed the bar from just outside the box before Ella Rutherford was there to tap the ball in to the goal.
The Lionesses could have made it 4 when Megan Wynne was brought down in the area but debutant Rianna Dean's penalty was well saved and then caught by the Watford goalie.
Despite not being able to add the fourth the task ahead for Watford became all but impossible when Laura May Walkley was shown a second yellow for a foul on Leigh Nicol just 10 minutes before picking up her first yellow.
The Lionesses saw off the last 10 minutes against the 10 of Watford and secured 3 points on the opening WSL fixture of the season.
