About the Lionesses

LionessesMillwall Lionesses Football Club was founded in 1971 and has been one of the stalwarts of the women's game. The club has led the way becoming the first women's team to affiliate to a professional men's club and pioneers of the 'Football in the Community Scheme' that is now common place amongst football of all standing but unheard of in the 70's.

Without the support of Millwall Football club, especially in the 70's and 80's, the success we have achieved would not have been possible.

With numerous teams and players ranging from 8-30 something, we have led the way and been very fortunate to remain amongst the top teams in this country.

The advancement of the women's game has led Millwall Lionesses to become a major player in the 'Millwall Community' programme and we now play an active part in the development of girls football in the community. Millwall were the first club to have a 'Female Centre of Excellence' which is now common place with the top women's clubs.

Through our youth policy we have developed many talented players who have gone on to gain international honours either with the Lionesses or another club. Current players who have gained international honours include Pru Buckley, Claire Rafferty and Amy Mason.

The club this season will be fielding two senior teams, the first team playing in the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division, and the second team in the Southern Premier League Reserve Division 2. Our junior teams will be competing in the South East FA Centre of Excellence League at under 16/14/12 and under 10. We also have a development section for those players who have not yet reached the Centre of Excellence standard.

With the exciting development taking place within our youth policy, we believe the club can once again become a force in women's football.
