Dockers Day
10 February 2007
Millwall Football Club commemorated its Docklands heritage on Saturday when The Lions entertained Chesterfield at The Den.
The club was formed in 1885 on the Isle of Dogs by workers at Morton's Jam Factory, but from its earliest times throughout the next century, dock workers in the locality were amongst the staunchest of loyal supporters.
Fifty years ago, Millwall enjoyed one of the great days in its history, knocking the Cup holders, Newcastle United out of the competition 2-0 at the old Den (26th January 1957).
The ground was packed with vociferous dockers that day, and to re-live the occasion we will be bringing the surviving members of that team, Stan Anslow, John Shepherd, Ray Brand, Bill Lloyd, Denis Pacey and John Smith together with a number of the dock workers who supported them so avidly.
The Port of London Authority will present a commemorative trophy to the dockers, and representatives from the Museum in Docklands and the Island Trust will also be present.
We would like to thank Peter, Chrissy Bethell , Dave Coates, Mick Thurbin, Terry Burnett (junior lions) and Millwall Football Club for making today such a special day for all.
To top off a great day Millwall won 2-1
