In this overdue re-match for the Finlay Cooper Cup, the MSC produced an immense display playing some excellent football winning 5-0. The Millwall squad included an impressive nine players that featured in the original match back in 2002. Martin Thomas sent Millwall on their way when he opened the scoring on 21 minutes after a great passing move from back to front which must have contained 25 passes. At the other end, the Lions defence were like an unmovable rock limiting 'Boro to long range efforts that keeper Matt Jones was more than equal to. Micky Blackmore increased the lead on 33 minutes when he beat the keeper from 22 yards following a period of sustained pressure. It remained 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw the Lions have the strong wind in their favour. The 'Boro lads had practically a new team out while Millwall made four substitutions with another couple later in the half. This didn’t disrupt the MSC's flow of play though as they continued to play some excellent football and added another three goals.
Geoff Williamson fired home from 25 yards on 48 minutes before a great solo goal from Kevin McEvoy saw him collect a ball out from Millwall defending a corner before outpacing a defender on the half way line and motoring up to the area were he tucked it past the keeper. Darren Spink then completed the scoring as he rounded the keeper and found the net from a tight angle to make it 5-0 as the score finished. Special mention must go to the 'Boro lads for trying hard right to the final whistle.
At the end of the match, Colin and Julie Cooper sincerely thanked everyone involved in the supporters match for their huge efforts in getting the event organised. Colin then presented the trophy to Lions skipper Danny Barber and chief organiser Jase Pickering.
A raffle and auction was then held pitchside to raise more money for the fund before we departed to The Riverside for Colin’s charity testimonial against Chievo. Just before the kick off of the game, the whole MSC squad went onto the pitch to present Colin with a silver salver to honour Colin’s time at the club and to demonstrate the affection Millwall fans have for Colin.
