Away Travel, General advice

The MSC Away Day Guide is based primarily for those travelling by train. Some information supplied will be of use to those going by road.

Travelling by train, tickets become available 12 weeks in advance of the day of travel. The prices can be extremely cheap compared to the on the day price. The sites I use are:

National Rail

Megatrain.com

Daysoutguide.co.uk/groupsave

Raileasy.co.uk

Planning your journey, you need to take into account that the savings are an “on the day of request” price and get more expensive the nearer to the day of travel you book. I try to get the 12 week prices and the day of travel prices at the same time.

Another tip is to break your journey: some trips can be cheaper if buy several returns (time consuming, so really a task for the patient planner). For example last season, it was cheaper to book tickets from Euston to Watford junction, then from Watford to Leeds then Leeds to Darlington, and Darlington to Hartlepool, this resulted in a saving of £30 to the straight London to Hartlepool fare. It also conveniently resulted in staying on the same train for the entire journey (this is not always so).

The fares seem to be cheaper once you are outside the greater London area; this is a generalisation because over the years prices have varied for different locations and different train operating companies.
